de krat: week two

The second week of fresh, locally produced food from de Krat (the crate) brought another loaf of bread, chanterelle mushrooms, two zucchinis, two yellow squash, two large tomatoes, two fish, a bottle of apple juice, a head of cauliflower, a bunch of fresh mint, a bag of spinach, fennel, mixed greens, and six potatoes.

First on the list to use is the zucchini for a loaf of zucchini bread. The mint will be tossed into a warm glass of water for fresh mint tea with honey. The cauliflower will go into a dish of spicy sauteed cauliflower with sesame. The rest of the items will be inspired by the recipes provided by de Krat along with the weekly crate.

  1. How coincidental… I’ve just started ordering a weekly fruit-and-veggie box from what sounds like a very similar set-up in Melbourne! They also pack up a box of seasonal and locally-grown organic produce and you go an collect it from a nearby “drop-off” point. Although we’re obviously in opposite seasons I’ll have to check what you’ve been making from your selections!

    • I have always eaten quite healthy, but I became more aware of the importance of eating local and along with the seasons after reading ‘Animal, Vegetable, Miracle’ by Barbara Kingsolver. I must admit, my boyfriend is the more creative cook. He filled the fish from this week’s box with a toasted almond, sundried tomato, onion, and herb mix topped it with lime, tomato, coriander, and olive oil and then baked in the oven. When I am not following a recipe, I play the sous chef to his creations, but it’s such a wonderful experience to find new recipes based on whatever shows up that week!

  2. Wow I wanna do this! It looks so nice.
